Pep Guardiola confirms when Riyad Mahrez will return for Manchester City

Pep Guardiola confirms when Riyad Mahrez will return for Manchester City

Manchester City face a trip down south for a clash with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton on Saturday evening.

In turn, Pep Guardiola would hold his pre-Southampton press conference on Friday.

When speaking to the press, the Spaniard provided an update on the situation of Riyad Mahrez. The winger has been at the Africa Cup of Nations with current holders, Algeria, for the last couple of weeks.

However, Algeria, remarkably, finished bottom of their group, meaning Mahrez is now out of the competition.

But, as confirmed by Guardiola on Friday, the wide-man will now take a week off, meaning he will miss out against Southampton:

“Now he has a holiday for a week. After AFCON he has permission for one week off and will come back with the team next week.”

Guardiola also confirmed that Nathan Ake is available for Saturday’s match, but Oleksandr Zinchenko will miss out.

Southampton vs Manchester City

Manchester City head into the Southampton game sitting pretty atop the Premier League table.

Pep Guardiola’s side are in superb form at present and have lost just two league games all season.

Their last defeat came all the way back on October 30th when Crystal Palace beat the Sky Blues 2-0.

Since that game, City have not dropped a single point in the Premier League, winning a very impressive 12 games on the spin.

As a result, a victory over Southampton looks frankly nailed on this weekend. The Saints are 12th in the Premier League, but have won just five times in 21 outings this season.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men, though, may take some solace in the fact that they were able to hold the Citizens to a 0-0 draw at the Etihad in the reverse fixture earlier in the campaign.
