Pep Guardiola confirms Man City will give Liverpool guard of honour

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Manchester City will give Liverpool a guard of honour at the Etihad next Thursday.

Man City vs Liverpool

Next week’s marquee Premier League clash pits Manchester City against Liverpool.

For the last couple of years, it has been these two sides who have dominated the English game, and formed a rather fierce rivalry.

Previously, it was the Sky Blues who largely had the better of the rivalry, with City having clinched the Premier League title in both 2017/18 and 2018/19.

Liverpool did take City down to the wire last term, with the Merseyside powerhouse having missed out on domestic glory by a solitary point.

However, the Reds have gone one better this season, and completely dominated the English top-flight.

With seven fixtures still to play, Liverpool have secured their first-ever Premier League title, boasting a staggering 23-point advantage over the Citizens.

City to give Liverpool guard of honour

Liverpool were actually crowned champions without kicking a ball on Thursday, due to 2nd-placed City falling to defeat at the hands of Chelsea.

As a result, the Reds’ next tie will be their first as Premier League champions.

This, of course, means Jurgen Klopp’s men are, by tradition, due a guard of honour prior to facing their upcoming opponents.

And the side that they are due to meet just so happens to come in the form of previous champions and close rivals Man City.

Whilst City’s stars probably won’t be overly eager to perform such an act for the side who have dethroned them, though, Pep Guardiola has recently confirmed that his team will indeed be providing a guard of honour for Liverpool:

“We are going to do the guard of honour of course.

“We will greet Liverpool, when they come to our house, in an incredible way. We are going to do it because they deserve it.”
