Pep Guardiola confirms Man City will field mostly academy players vs Bournemouth

Man City vs Bournemouth

Manchester City are set to get their League Cup defence underway later this week.

The Citizens have, over the last seven years, begun to dominate the competition.

In fact, Man City have won five of the last seven English League Cups, including three in a row under Pep Guardiola.

City’s first opponent this season comes in the form of Championship outfit Bournemouth.

The Sky Blues boast a superb record against the Cherries, and have actually never lost against them – a record that dates back to 1987.

Man City to utilise youngsters

So, given the fact that City are League Cup specialists, and almost always beat Bournemouth, they are understandably viewed as overwhelming favourites ahead of Thursday’s tie.

However, recent comments on the part of Pep Guardiola suggest that Bournemouth may yet be in with a shot of picking up their first-ever competitive win over the Citizens, in the process ousting the competition holders from the League Cup.

Man City saw off Wolves by three goals to one on Monday evening, in their first outing of the season.

And, speaking on the back of his side’s victory at Molineux, Guardiola confirmed that the Manchester giants are set to field a host of academy stars at the Etihad on Thursday:

“Against Bournemouth we will play mostly players in the academy and try to keep energy for the Premier League.

“With the lack of preparation and seven players out, we have to keep the players who played today as fresh as possible.

“We will see how the players recover. We won the Carabao Cup three times and we want to win again but we will have to see.

“It is what it is. We have to adapt. Winning away in this stadium is so difficult. That’s why it’s a good victory for us.

“We cannot pretend we can recover in three days. That’s the situation we have.”
