Who will end up replacing Rafa Benitez?
Patrick Vieira, Steven Gerrard and Mikel Arteta reportedly head Newcastle’s shortlist to replace Rafael Benitez as manager.
It was announced this week that Newcastle would be losing Benitez when his contract expires at the end of this month.
In a statement released on their official website, the club revealed that an extension to his contract could not be agreed upon.
‘We have worked hard to extend Rafa’s contract over a significant period of time, however, it has not been – and will not be – possible to reach an agreement with Rafa and his representatives,’ the statement explained.
As a result, Newcastle are now on the lookout for a new manager.
Jose Mourinho was recently the shock favourite, but now two new names have entered the fray.
Patrick Vieira and Steven Gerrard enter the fray
According to the Telegraph, Patrick Vieira and Steven Gerrard ‘head’ the Rafa replacement shortlist, along with Manchester City’s Mikel Arteta.
Their report claims that ‘Newcastle United are yet to make contact with any of their managerial targets but have drawn up a shortlist headed by Patrick Vieira, Steven Gerrard and Mikel Arteta.’
Viera is currently in charge at Ligue 1 outfit Nice, and it’s claimed that he ‘has no plans to leave’. It is added, though, that he ‘would be interested in listening to what the Magpies had to say if they do make an approach.’
Mikel Arteta is also supposedly interested in listening, though he does have concerns about the potential job.
Lastly, Gerrard has ‘insisted he wants to continue at Rangers’.
Other managers linked in the report include Eddie Howe, Sean Dyche and Steve Bruce.
