Everton star torn apart for performance vs Burnley

Those watching the clash between Burnley and Everton this afternoon have taken to social media to absolutely slate one Toffees player.

Matchup

The two sides went head to head at Turf Moor, with hosts Burnley having come into proceedings on the back of a dismal run of no wins from their last 12 across all competitions.

Everton, meanwhile, followed their morale-boosting 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace two weeks ago with a hugely-disappointing 1-0 loss at the hands of Watford last time out.

First-half

The early proceedings of this afternoon’s clash saw both sides exchange chances, with Burnley controlling the majority of possession but Everton looking dangerous on the break.

And the away side’s intent in attacking areas paid dividends in the 20th-minute, as Seamus Coleman flicked on Theo Walcott’s cross, allowing Cenk Tosun to drive home his first goal in Everton colours on his 5th league appearance for the Toffees.

Turnaround

The visitors managed to hold onto their lead until ten minutes into the second-half, when Ashley Barnes latched onto Matt Lowton’s perfect through ball to smash past Jordan Pickford at his near post.

And the Clarets were fully rewarded for their dominant second-half showing with a winner in the 80th-minute, as substitute Chris Wood rose highest at the back post to nod home Jóhann Guðmundsson’s corner from the left.

Shocking showing

This was how things ended, with a thoroughly miserable afternoon for the away side compounded by a late red card for central defender Ashley Williams.

Following a dismal showing from the Welsh stopper alongside Michael Keane at the heart of the Toffees’ defence over the course of today’s clash, Williams lashed out at Ashley Barnes with an elbow as an Everton corner was whipped into the Burnley box in the 86th-minute, with referee Chris Kavanagh rightly giving the former Swansea man his marching orders as a result.

Reaction

Fans have since taken to Twitter in numbers to absolutely tear into Williams for both his performance and late moment of madness, with some of the highlights below:
