‘Once a Red, always a Red’ – Odion Ighalo announces Man United departure

‘Once a Red, always a Red’ – Odion Ighalo announces Man United departure

United stint

Nigerian hitman Ighalo of course secured a surprise return to the Premier League during last year’s winter transfer window.

The 31-year-old, who previously lined out for Watford, was snapped up by Manchester United on deadline day.

Ighalo made the move to Old Trafford on loan for the remainder of the campaign, after a long-term injury picked up by Marcus Rashford forced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and co. into the market for reinforcements up top.

And, though Ighalo was widely viewed as something of a panic signing at the time, he actually went on to represent a reliable option when handed the chance to impress over the 2nd half of the season, eventually notching 5 goals across all competitions.

A wonder-strike versus Austrian outfit LASK in a Europa League clash, meanwhile, proved a particular highlight:

‘Once a Red, always a Red’

In turn, United opted to extend the terms of their loan agreement for Ighalo through the opening half of the current campaign.

To say that this spell has since proven somewhat disappointing, though, would be putting it lightly.

The once-prolific attacker has managed just a pair of appearances between the Premier League and Champions League thus far, amounting to a grand total of 10 minutes.

This of course comes with Edinson Cavani having linked up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad during the summer transfer window.

As such, it has since come as little surprise to see Ighalo, amid his struggles for game-time, this evening announce his imminent departure from Old Trafford.

Taking to social media a short time ago, the Nigerian, of course a lifelong fan of the Red Devils, posted a heartfelt message, revealing his gratitude to all associated with the club for enabling him to fulfill a ‘dream’:

Ighalo is primed to return parent club Shanghai Shenhua, but has been tipped for a swift return to English football.
