Ole Gunnar Solskjaer speaks out over Harry Maguire and Man United captaincy situation for 2020/21

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this morning provided an update on the captaincy situation at Old Trafford.

Maguire charged

The main talking point concerning Solskjaer’s squad last month of course surrounded skipper Harry Maguire.

This came with the English international having been at the centre of a major controversy, whilst on his summer holidays away from the club.

During a night out on the Greek island of Mykonos, a series of events eventually resulted in Maguire being arrested by local police.

A host of varying accounts regarding exactly what transpired on the night in question subsequently followed, with Maguire’s defence team having claimed in court that the incident was instigated by a pair of men, who injected the Manchester United star’s sister with an unknown substance.

It was also suggested that the stopper was the victim of a police assault, with Maguire having been threatened with a career-ending injury.

When all was said and done, though, the 27-year-old was nevertheless found guilty of a trio of offences, in the form of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and repeated attempts of bribery:

In turn, Maguire was handed a 21-month suspended prison sentence.

‘Here to support him’

Whilst the dust has since settled on the situation, and Maguire has returned to Manchester ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, though, one question which has nevertheless persisted surrounds the captaincy situation at Old Trafford.

The former Leicester City man was of course named the Red Devils’ new permanent skipper this past January, following Ashley Young’s move to Inter Milan.

Maguire’s status as United’s leader, though, had since been thrown somewhat up in the air, on the back of last month’s events in Mykonos.

As such, speaking this weekend ahead of his side’s fast-approaching season opener versus Crystal Palace, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was inevitably drawn on the captaincy situation at the club.

The Norwegian, though, was quick to provide his backing to Maguire, confirming that the English international will continue as his side’s skipper in 2020/21:

‘Of course, Harry, as you said, had a difficult summer. He didn’t have a long break,’ Solskjaer explained to Manchester United’s official website.

‘His break was different to others as we gave him a few more days and, after, he’s come back and looked fine.’

‘He’s handled it really well and, of course, I’ll be here to support him. He is going to be our captain. We’ll just leave Harry and his people and the process to run.’

‘For me, he is a top, an absolute top human being and has always been a positive guy with the right values. So I really hope we can see Harry performing at his best.’
