Wesley Hoedt

Liverpool and Chelsea prepare Van Dijk assault as Southampton officially sign Wesley Hoedt from Lazio

Premier League side Southampton have this evening confirmed the signing of defender Wesley Hoedt from Italian outfit Lazio.

Serie A stopper

A 4-time capped Dutch international, Hoedt arrived at the Stadio Olimpico on a free transfer from AZ Alkmaar in 2015, though the 23-year-old initially struggled to find his feet in Serie A.

However, last season saw the central defender establish himself as a regular in Lazio’s starting XI, impressing with 3 goals in 26 competitive appearances for the Biancocelesti.

On the move

Last season’s impressive campaign in the Italian capital has proved to be his last with the club, though, with Southampton having confirmed via the club’s social media channels they that have officially signed Hoedt this evening.

Though Hoedt’s arrival at St Mary’s does not technically confirm that Saints star man Virgil Van Dijk will be departing the club over the next week, it will certainly provide suitors Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal with renewed hope in their chase for the Premier League’s most in-demand defender.
