Official: Sheffield United ‘significantly smash’ club transfer record to sign Oli McBurnie

Premier League newcomers Sheffield United have this afternoon announced the signing of Oli McBurnie from Swansea City.

Swans stint

23-year-old striker McBurnie spent the last 4 years of his career on the books of Swansea City.

After making the move to Wales from Bradford City in 2015, McBurnie was subsequently farmed out on a series of loans over the seasons that followed, as the Scot struggled to make an impact with his parent club.

A solid half-campaign with Barnsley in the Championship over the second-half of the 2017-18 season, though, saw McBurnie begin to showcase his goalscoring talents on a consistent basis, eventually leading to the hitman being handed the opportunity to impress at the Liberty Stadium over the last 12 months.

And this was a chance that McBurnie went on to grasp with both hands.

All told, last season saw the 7-time capped international find the net on 24 occasions across all competitions.

United switch

Despite McBurnie’s exploits, however, Swansea only managed a 10th-placed finish in the Championship.

As such, it subsequently came as little surprise to see the attacker linked with a potential Liberty departure this summer.

And, on the back of mounting speculation of late that one club in particular, in the form of Sheffield United, were pushing hard for McBurnie’s signature, a move for the Scot has today come to fruition.

As confirmed across the Blades’ social media platforms a short time ago, the Bradford youth product has made the move to Bramall Lane in a club-record deal, which has ‘significantly smashed’ United’s previous biggest outlay on a single player:

As per the BBC:

‘The initial fee for McBurnie is believed to be about £17.5m, with the rest of the offer dependent on add-ons.’
