Official: Newcastle United complete club-record signing of Joelinton

Premier League outfit Newcastle United have this evening confirmed the big-money signing of Joelinton from Hoffenheim.

Bundesliga stint

Joelinton, a versatile 22-year-old attacker who generally lines out at centre-forward, has been plying his trade in Europe since 2015, when he made the move to Hoffenheim from his home country of Brazil.

The first few years of his spell with Die Kraichgauer, though, saw Joelinton struggle for game-time.

As such, a two-year loan stint in Austria with Rapid Vienna followed, on the back of which the gifted hitman was finally afforded the opportunity to showcase his talents in the Bundesliga.

This past season eventually saw Joelinton establish himself as a key contributor at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena, as the South American, who has been likened to Liverpool standout Roberto Firmino, went on to rack up 11 goals and 9 assists in 35 appearances across all competitions.

Newcastle switch

And Joelinton’s stellar form in Germany over the course of the 2018/19 campaign certainly didn’t go unnoticed across Europe.

Rumours had mounted of late that the 22-year-old had been identified as the ideal answer to Newcastle’s chasm up-top, on the back the respective departures of Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon.

As such, it has since come as little surprise to see the attacker’s move to St. James’ Park made official this evening.

In a statement across the club’s social media channels a short time ago, Newcastle confirmed Joelinton’s signing for an undisclosed club-record fee, thought to be around £40 million:

The Sport Recife youth product has put pen-to-paper on a 6-year deal on Tyneside:

Speaking on the back of his arrival being made official, Joelinton revealed:

‘I’m really happy to be here. I know it’s a large investment that the club has made in me, and that comes with a huge responsibility.’

‘I’m highly motivated and hope to give back on the pitch.’
