Official: Newcastle seal loan signing of Monaco’s Antonio Barreca

Newcastle United have this afternoon confirmed that Monaco defender Antonio Barreca has joined the club on loan until the end of the season.

Monaco stint

Barreca, a 23-year-old left-back, only made the move to Ligue 1 last summer, after falling down the pecking order at boyhood club Torino.

The former Italian U21-international subsequently went on to start 7 league outings in the French top-flight to this point in the current campaign.

However, all of these starts came during the opening 3 months of the season, with Monaco’s recent struggles and subsequent changes in management having since seen Barreca fall badly out of favour.

Newcastle switch

As such, it came as little surprise to see the stopper linked with a potential Stade Louis exit this month.

Premier League outfit Newcastle United emerged as the front-runners to secure a deal for Barreca over the last couple of weeks, with the Magpies known to be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements.

And, as per the aforementioned announcement this afternoon, a deal has today been clinched, with Barreca having penned a contract at St. James’ Park until the end of the season, with subsequent option to buy in the summer:
