Official: David Luiz departs Chelsea for Arsenal/Alex Iwobi joins Everton

Arsenal have this evening confirmed the arrival of David Luiz from London rivals Chelsea.

Tierney signs

It’s been a hectic 24 hours at the Emirates Stadium.

On the back of a number of impressive additions to Unai Emery’s squad this summer, despite widespread reports of a minimal transfer budget at the disposal of the Gunners’ transfer chiefs, reports mounted yesterday evening that a pair of defenders were inching closer to respective moves to north London.

The first of these players came in the form of long-standing target Kieran Tierney.

The Celtic stopper was known to have been on the wishlist of Arsenal boss Emery throughout the summer, with his last-gasp addition having finally been made official earlier today:

Luiz follows suit

While links between the Gunners and Tierney had obviously been circulating for some time, though, rumours of interest on the part of the capital giants in their 2nd deadline day addition came as something of a bolt from the blue.

The departure of captain Laurent Koscielny earlier this week meant that reinforcements at centre-half had emerged as something of a pressing concern for Arsenal ahead of the new season.

This saw links to the likes of Dayot Upamecano and Daniele Rugani rampant over the last 48 hours.

What was not expected in the slightest, however, was the breaking news last night that Chelsea stopper David Luiz was on the verge of linking up with Unai Emery’s squad.

As claims began to mount that Brazilian veteran Luiz had fallen out with Blues’ boss Frank Lampard, though, the possibility of an Emirates switch coming to fruition began to look more and more realistic.

And, in news that will no doubt come as a major source of relief to those of an Arsenal persuasion with major concerns over the heart of their side’s backline, Luiz’s signing has tonight been made official:

The 32-year-old is reported to have set the Gunners back just £8 million.

Iwobi joins Everton

In a further piece of breaking news regarding Arsenal, meanwhile, a big-money departure from the Emirates has also been announced.

On the back of rumours that Everton’s frustrations in their pursuit of Wilfried Zaha had seen the Toffees switch their attentions to Alex Iwobi, Marco Silva’s men have tonight secured the Nigerian’s signature.

Iwobi has put pen-to-paper on a 5-year deal at Goodison Park, in a move worth a reported £34 million.
