Official: Arsenal youngster Mavropanos joins Nurnberg on loan

Arsenal have this evening confirmed that young defender Konstantinos Mavropanos has joined Bundesliga 2 outfit Nurnberg on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Arsenal stint

22-year-old stopper Mavropanos has been on the books of the Gunners since 2018, when he made the move to the Emirates from PAS Giannina in his home country of Greece.

To this point, however, the former U21 international has largely-struggled for first-team opportunities.

A combination of competition for places and injury problems have seen Mavropanos rack up just 8 total Premier League appearances in two years.

None of these, meanwhile, came over the first-half of the current campaign, with the 22-year-old’s time on the pitch having been restricted to cup competitions.

Nurnberg switch

As such, with Mavropanos still sitting behind the likes of David Luiz, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Rob Holding in the central-defensive pecking order at Arsenal, it had come as little surprise to see the Greek tipped for a January departure.

The stopper is at a crucial point in his young career in terms of his development, with Mavropanos no doubt desperate to secure first-team football week-in, week-out.

And, as outlined above, such opportunities look set to prove considerably easier to come by over the second-half of the season.

An announcement across Arsenal’s social media platforms a short time ago confirmed that Mavropanos has made the move to German 2nd division outfit Nurnberg for the remainder of the campaign:

Coincidentally, Mavropanos is the 2nd Premier League-based player to have secured a loan switch to the Bundesliga 2 today, after Nat Phillips’ return to Stuttgart from Liverpool was also made official:
