Official: Arsenal and Barcelona miss out as AS Roma sign Steven NZonzi

Serie A outfit AS Roma have this evening announced the signature of in-demand Sevilla midfielder Steven NZonzi.

Sevilla standout

NZonzi, a deep-lying midfielder equally adept either with the ball at his feet or at breaking up the attacks of opposing sides, has established himself as one of the finest midfielders in La Liga over the last couple of seasons.

As such, the talents of the French international, who added a World Cup winners’ medal to his trophy cabinet this summer, have seen him inevitably linked with a move to some of Europe’s biggest clubs over the last 12 months, with both Juventus and Arsenal having previously been heavily touted as potential destinations.

Last season proved a rather-peculiar one for NZonzi, with a major fallout between he and former Sevilla boss Eduardo Berizzo in November having seen NZonzi dropped from the club’s first-team for 6 weeks.

In the end, though, despite having been widely expected to move on in January, the former Stoke and Blackburn man stayed put, eventually working his way back into the first-team plans of the Andalusian outfit to feature prominently over the second-half of the campaign.

NZonzi joins Roma

Nevertheless, though, the rumours surrounding NZonzi’s name have persisted, with Barcelona and AS Roma having been named as the leading contenders for the 29-year-old’s services this summer.

And, after the ever-reliable Gianluca Di Marzio reported last night that Roma were on the verge of sealing a deal with Sevilla, the Giallorossi have tonight officially confirmed the Frenchman’s arrival, with a typically-brilliant pair of posts across the club’s social media channels:

As per a statement on Roma’s official website, the club have splashed out an initial fee of €26.65 million, plus a potential further 4 million in bonuses, on NZonzi’s signature.
