Saturday’s match is looking like an absolute must-win for Norwich if they are to have any hopes of staying up.

Norwich have shown clear signs of improvement lately. A narrow 1-0 defeat to league leaders Liverpool is their only loss at home in their last five at Carrow Road.

Despite losing four of their last five league matches, Southampton have still got a comfortable gap between themselves and the drop zone.

Southampton come into the match on the back of consecutive defeats. Last weekend they were beaten 1-0 at home to Newcastle and finished the match with 10 men. The scoreline could’ve been worse but Alex McCarthy saved a Matt Ritchie penalty, in addition to making a number of other stops.

Only one team has picked up fewer points at home this season than Norwich – that’s Southampton. That said, the Saints’ away form has been superb this season. They have won six matches on the road – only Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea and Leicester have won more.

Depending on other results, Norwich could move to within three points of safety if they win on Saturday. Southampton could leapfrog Newcastle into 13th if they win this one.

Norwich and Southampton have met 15 times in the Premier League. Southampton have six wins to Norwich’s five. The Saints were 2-1 winners in the reverse fixture at St. Mary’s in December. Goals from Danny Ings and Ryan Bertrand gave Southampton a 2-0 lead at the break before Teemu Pukki halved the deficit in the second half.

Ralf Fahrmann has missed Norwich’s last two games due to personal reasons and is not expected to feature.

Norwich could field the same eleven that lost at Sheffield United. Josip Drmic, Mario Vrancic, Adam Idah and Lukas Rupp are all alternate options for Daniel Farke if he wants to freshen things up. with a chance of featuring off the bench.

Christoph Zimmermann was fit enough for the bench last time out but may have to wait a bit more for a start.

Timm Klose, Sam Byram and Onel Hernandez remain sidelined for the Canaries.

The Saints will be without Moussa Djenepo. The winger begins a three-match ban following his straight red card last weekend.

Ralph Hasenhuttl hopes to have Stuart Armstrong available. Armstrong has returned to training following a concussion and could replace Djenepo in the starting eleven.

Shane Long is likely to partner Danny Ings in attack. Che Adams and Michael Obafemi provide alternate attacking options.

January signing Kyle Walker-Peters could replace Yan Valery at right-back following his costly mistake against Newcastle.

William Smallbone is expected to be available for selection following an illness.

Nathan Redmond misses out against his former club. Ryan Bertrand is in contention to face his former employers. Bertrand made 56 league appearances while on loan at Norwich between 2008 and 2009.
