Northern Ireland vs Austria betting tips: UEFA Nations League match preview & predictions

Northern Ireland vs Austria prediction: Northern Ireland 1-0 Austria

A dead rubber at Windsor Park.

Thursday’s result ensured that pointless Northern Ireland will be relegated to League C.

However, if any stadium in Europe can make a dead game an event its Windsor Park so can Michael O’Neil’s side build some momentum ahead of March’s qualifiers?

Northern Ireland vs Austria: Who will win?

Northern Ireland are 12/5 to claim their first UEFA Nations League win.

Austria are big favourites at 23/20.

A draw is 23/10.

The 5 Nations League games these two have been involved in have only seen 7 goals. This makes under 2.5 goals at 8/11 seem likely.

Northern Ireland still haven’t scored in the Nations League. Kyle Lafferty will be their biggest goal threat and is 11/2 to score first and 2/1 to net anytime.

Marko Arnautović scored the only goal in the reverse fixture. The West Ham forward is 4/1 to break the deadlock and 6/4 to score in 90 minutes.

Both Lafferty and Arnautović to score is 13/2.

Northern Ireland vs Austria: Match preview

Northern Ireland’s UEFA Nations League campaign has been very disappointing.

Their good performances have not earned the results they’ve deserved with missed chances the story of their season.

They lost to 2-1 Bosnia & Herzegovina on matchday 1 despite having 26 shots to their opponents’ 5.

Their luck didn’t change in last month’s away double header either.

They were beaten 1-0 in Vienna by Austria before losing 2-0 in Sarajevo to Bosnia three days later.

That leaves them as one of just 5 sides who are still pointless in the UEFA Nations League.

Their relegation was confirmed on Thursday despite the fact they were only playing a friendly match.

They drew 0-0 in Dublin with rivals Republic of Ireland but should be encouraged by the performance as they were the better side.

Even though this game means nothing, Michael O’Neil will be hoping to gather some momentum ahead of the Euro 2020 qualifiers that commence in March.

As for Austria, they have retained their League B status.

On matchday 1 they were beaten 1-0 in Zenica by Bosnia but that remains their only defeat of the campaign.

In their second match they bounced back at Ernst-Happel-Stadion by beating Northern Ireland 1-0.

On Thursday, they hosted Bosnia.

A draw for Austria would see them stay up and a win for Bosnia would see them go up.

So, as was widely predicted, the game finished goalless and Austria survive.

This makes this game a dead rubber but one neither side will want to lose.

Despite this game’s lack of importance, a strong line up is predicted for the home side.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell has started all 17 of Leeds United’s Championship matches this season and that has helped the 22 year-old establish himself as his country’s number 1.

Gareth McAuley has only played two minutes all season for Rangers and is unlikely to get in ahead of Jonny Evans or Craig Cathcart.

Jamal Lewis has shone since making his debut in March and will win his seventh cap.

Oliver Norwood, who’s been in form for Sheffield United, is out with an injury.

That’ll see Oxford United midfielder Gavin Whyte win only his fourth cap.

Will Grigg is also out so Kyle Lafferty, who’s back in the squad, could win his 69th cap up front.

After shinning for Kilmarnock this season, Jordan Jones could win his fifth cap on the left-wing.

They’re a very defensively strong side and, if they can start putting their chances away, their results will vastly improve.

With survival already assured, it hard to predict what kind of side Franco Foda is going to pick.

Heinz Lindner, of Swiss Super League club Grasshoppers, has started the last 8 competitive internationals but Richard Strebinger could win only his second cap.

Since the meeting in Vienna, they’ve switched from a back 3 to a back 4.

Watford’s Sebastian Prödl, is out but Aleksandar Dragović, once of Leicester City, will win his 70th cap.

Young Ajax centre-back Maximilian Wöber is also injured.

Stefan Lainer of RB Salzburg will start at right wing-back as Stoke City’s Moritz Bauer has been left out the squad all together.

David Alaba of Bayern Munich is their star man and it’ll be interesting to see where he plays if at all.

Captain Julian Baumgartlinger has returned to the squad after injury and is pivotal to their midfield.

They can boast one of the Premier League’s leading marksmen too.

West Ham United’s Marko Arnautović has scored 5 goals this season and will be looking for his 21st international goal.

The Austrian record is 44 so he has some way to go to beat that.

Does this Austrian side have enough to break down Northern Ireland?
