‘Nobody is giving up on Kepa’: Petr Cech hints Spaniard still has future at Chelsea

Petr Cech, technical and performance advisor at Chelsea, has recently hinted that Kepa will be staying at Stamford Bridge for the time being.

Chelsea eyeing new goalkeeper

Cech’s comments come on the back of months of speculation that Chelsea are eyeing a new goalkeeper.

Two of the shot-stoppers most persistently linked with a move to Stamford Bridge have been Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak and Ajax’s Andre Onana – though such links have died down in recent weeks.

Manchester United youngster Dean Henderson had even been named as a potential target of the Blues, though the 23-year-old has since agreed a new five-year deal with the Red Devils.

However, Chelsea’s search for reinforcements between the sticks does not appear to have halted.

In fact, the Londoners are reported to be extremely keen to land Rennes’ Edouard Mendy.

As we recently covered, Chelsea are understood to have seen a £15m bid for Mendy rejected early last week, but have since come back in with a fresh offer of around £18m.

Cech on Kepa

Amid links to so many potential signings between the posts, fans could be forgiven for assuming that Chelsea are keen to ship Kepa off as soon as possible.

After all, they did pay a world-record £71m for the Spaniard, whose displays, especially last season, were pretty awful.

However, as outlined above, when speaking about Kepa during a recent interview, Chelsea legend Petr Cech appeared to hint that the 25-year-old still has a future at the club, insisting that ‘nobody is giving up’ on him, and that all involved at Stamford Bridge hope that he goes on to enjoy a ‘great future’.

Cech did, however, also concede that discussions over the possibility of the Blues adding a new goalkeeper are underway:

“Kepa struggled last season, that is unquestionable.

“But the club invested in him and gave him a long-term contract because they believe he has the qualities and attributes to be successful.

“Additions will be made to the squad, perhaps even in goal, and this is what is being discussed now.

“But nobody is giving up on Kepa and we all hope he has a great future.”

Should Mendy, or any other shot-stopper, make the move to southwest London, as reported by the Telegraph back in July, it would likely be to provide competition for Kepa, rather than outright replace the Spaniard.
