No washbag: Why Romelu Lukaku & David De Gea didn’t play for Man United vs Leeds

Romelu Lukaku, no washbag

The warning sign was there when Romelu Lukaku stepped off the Manchester United bus.

As noticed by the Press Association’s Simon Peach, the Belgian didn’t have his washbag with him.

No self-respecting player turns up for a match without his cleaning kit, unless they knew they weren’t playing.

Man United squad vs Leeds

When Man United released their matchday squad against Leeds on Wednesday, it was no surprise that Lukaku’s name was absent.

Man United’s team news was as follows:

Manchester United XI: Romero, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Bailly, Rojo, McTominay, Pogba, Greenwood, Mata, James, Rashford.

Subs: Pereira, Dalot, Jones, Smalling, Tuanzebe, Young, Andreas Pereira, Garner, Gomes, Matic, Chong, Lingard, Martial.

As for Leeds, their squad news was as follows:

Leeds XI: Casilla, Dallas, Cooper, Berardi, Douglas, Phillips, Forshaw, Harrison, Hernandez, Roofe, Bamford.

Subs: Miazek, Hosannah, Oduor, Bogusz, Stevens.

Why Romelu Lukaku was missing vs Leeds

According to the BBC’s Simon Stone, the official reason why Lukaku missed the Leeds game is because of a “knock” sustained in training.

But really?

Lukaku has been linked with a move to Inter Milan this summer.

Why David De Gea was missing vs Leeds

Another player who was absent for Man United against Leeds was goalie David De Gea.

De Gea was ruled out of the game through illness.

However, some fans may also feel De Gea’s absence is slightly suspicious considering the keeper has so-far not penned a contract extension.

According to reports, Man United are willing to offer De Gea 375,000 pounds a week to stay at Old Trafford.
