Nightmare for Bayern as star player is out v Real Madrid

Bayern Munich v Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti has been served a huge blow in the hours building up to Wednesday night’s Champions League quarterfinal first-leg against Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena.

German news outlet Bild have broken the news that the club’s star centre-forward Robert Lewandowski will play no part in the tie against Los Blancos.

The 28-year-old Polish international is the Bavarians top goalscorer this season with 26 goals in 26 games in the Bundesliga.

In all competitions for club and country in 2016-17, Lewandowski has an incredible 47 goals and five assist in 54 appearances.

There’s no doubt that his absence will be sorely missed by Bayern Munich, who will likely shift Thomas Muller into a more central role to compensate.

In truth, the injury news isn’t too surprising. Lewandowski suffered a shoulder injury in Bayern’s 4-1 win against Borussia Dortmund last weekend and he missed the final training session ahead of the Madrid clash on Tuesday.

It’s also been confirmed that Bayern centre-half Mats Hummels picked up an injury at training on Sunday. Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez are likely to form Bayern’s centre-half pairing.

As for Real Madrid, they have their own injury problems at the back as Raphael Varane and Pepe are both out of contention for the Bayern game.
