Newcastle United have a week off
Having been knocked out the FA Cup away at Chelsea earlier in the season, Newcastle United are currently enjoying a bit of time off.
Many Premier League sides who are enjoying this break have left England for warmer climates.
Everton are in Dubai, for example, while Liverpool are in sunny Spain.
Yet Newcastle United haven’t gone anywhere. They’ve stayed in the cold north-east to train.
Rafa Benitez on warm-weather training camps
The Newcastle Chronicle have spoken to Rafa Benitez about that decision.
The Spanish coach has given an pretty sensible explanation for why Newcastle haven’t gone abroad this February:
In my experience, players travelling around the country for the whole season, then telling them we will go somewhere else, they will ask: ‘What about my family?’
So if they have some days off then they can stay with their families, rather than going to Dubai to enjoy the weather. You could bring the families to Dubai too, but it is quite expensive, and the children need to be in school too.
For us, as coaches we prefer to keep the players training in a normal environment. Then, if they have some time, they can go and enjoy it with the families.
Bournemouth vs Newcastle
The Magpies gave themselves a huge shot in the arm when they beat Man United 1-0 last time out.
Those three points took Newcastle up to 13th in the division.
When the Toon return to action next weekend they take on Bournemouth.
Eddie Howe’s men are just three points above Newcastle in the table, so a win for the Magpies could take them above Bournemouth.
