Newcastle vs Southampton betting tips: Premier League match preview & predictions

Newcastle vs Southampton prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Southampton

Prior to their defeat against Crystal Palace a fortnight ago, Newcastle had won five consecutive Premier League matches at St. James’ Park.

Southampton have won three of their last four matches, including victories over Spurs and Wolves.

A win for either side would all but guarantee their top-flight status for another year.

Newcastle vs Southampton: Who will win?

Newcastle are 31/20 favourites to win the game while Southampton are priced at 21/10. The draw can be backed at 11/5.

Both sides have kept just one clean sheet in their last five matches. Back both teams to score at 19/20.

Nathan Redmond will be full of confidence following his brace last weekend. Redmond is 13/2 to open the scoring and 12/5 to score anytime.

Newcastle United host Southampton at St. James’ Park on Saturday evening.

Southampton surprised a few people with their 3-1 home win over Wolves last weekend, the Saints’ third victory in their last four. Nathan Redmond scored twice in the first half before Shane Long wrapped things up in the second period.

The win saw Southampton leapfrog Brighton into 16th position. Southampton are five points clear of the relegation zone, and have a game in hand over Cardiff – who face Liverpool this weekend.

With matches against Watford, Bournemouth, West Ham and Huddersfield still to come, Ralph Hasenhuttl will be confident of his side’s chances of avoiding the drop.

Newcastle also won last time out, ending a three match winless run. The Magpies beat Leicester 1-0 at the King Power Stadium last Friday. Ayoze Perez’s 7th league goal of the campaign was enough to separate the two sides.

The win leaves Newcastle in 15th, two points above Saturday’s opponents.

Saturday’s match will be the 36th Premier League meeting between the two sides, who have a pretty even record against one another. Southampton have won on 15 occasions to Newcastle’s 12.

The two sides played out a 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture at St Mary’s in October.

Newcastle team news vs Southampton

Florian Lejeune is likely to miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury, meaning Paul Dummett should continue alongside Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles. Federico Fernandez provides Rafa Benitez with another defensive option.

DeAndre Yedlin could replace Javier Manquillo at right wing back.

Mo Diame managed 8 minutes against Leicester on his return from injury. Diame and Jonjo Shelvey are pushing for starts but will find it difficult to get in the side ahead of Isaac Hayden and Ki Sung-Yeung.

Salomon Rondon is expected to lead the line, supported by Ayoze Perez and Miguel Almiron. Christian Atsu and Yoshinori Muto are back-up wide options.

Sean Longstaff is sidelined until next season with a knee injury.

Southampton team news vs Newcastle

Ralph Hasenhuttl has confirmed that Jannik Vestergaard is a doubt for the match.

Despite starting last weekend, the defender has been struggling recently with a groin problem. Jack Stephens is likely to deputise for Vestergaard, should Hasenhuttl stick with a back five.

Yan Valery has trained as normal and is expected to start. The right wingback was forced off with cramp against Wolves.

Mario Lemina has returned to light training following an abdominal injury. The midfielder has not featured for the Saints this year and could miss the remainder of the season.

Michael Obafemi remains sidelined with a muscle injury.
