Newcastle ‘unlikely’ to take up purchase option on Willems – BILD

Willems shines for Newcastle

Jetro Willems made the switch to Newcastle United at the beginning of the current campaign.

The Dutchman joined the Magpies on a season-long loan from Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt.

Willems had a fairly bright start to life in the North East, and marked his second Premier League start for the club with a sensational strike vs league leaders Liverpool.

The marauding full-back continued to impress for Steve Bruce’s side, earning assists vs Manchester United and West Ham, before scoring another great goal vs Manchester City.

Willems suffers injury blow

However, the 25-year-old’s season was curtailed in January due to injury.

Willems had to be stretchered off 12 minutes into Newcastle’s 1-0 victory over Chelsea on the 18th of January.

Steve Bruce then confirmed a few days later that the Dutch international had ruptured his ACL, and will miss the remainder of the campaign.

And that injury looks to have put an end to any hopes that Newcastle fans may have had about signing Willems on a permanent basis.

It was reported back when Willems first signed for Newcastle that they had an option to buy him at the end of the current season.

But according to a recent report from German outlet BILD, it seems unlikely that Newcastle will now take up the purchase option for Willems, which BILD claim is around €11m.
