Newcastle United in talks with Eddie Howe over vacant managerial position

Newcastle United in talks with Eddie Howe over vacant managerial position

Newcastle’s managerial hunt

Newcastle are facing the prospect of Graeme Jones being in caretaker charge for a second consecutive game as they struggle to find a new manager ahead of Saturday’s clash with Brighton.

Now, of course, under new ownership, the Magpies decided to part ways with Steve Bruce following a 3-1 defeat to Tottenham, a decision few could argue with given that the Tyneside outfit are yet to win a game this season in 10 (then 9) attempts, and sit in the Premier League relegation zone.

What is perhaps more difficult to comprehend is the lack of plan surrounding a potential replacement. Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery emerged as the leading candidate over the past few days, but opted to remain at Villarreal after the news was leaked ahead of a key Champions League clash for his side.

With no club hierarchy in place, it is imperative that Newcastle appoint a manager that can operate on several executive levels, too, or, alternatively, appoint a director of football.

Howe in talks for the job

Following Emery’s snub, it appears that former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe is now in pole position for the role. The Athletic’s David Ornstein previously revealed that the race had been narrowed to the Englishman and Emery, but with the latter as favourite, as informal talks continued.

Now, though, as per Sky Sports, talks have become formal, with the outlet reporting that:

“Talks are ongoing between Newcastle and Eddie Howe over their vacant manager’s position.”

Would Eddie Howe prove the right man for the job?
