Newcastle trolled by the Match of the Day subtitles v Liverpool

Newcastle 1 – Liverpool 1

Liverpool dropped two more points in the Premier League away at Newcastle.

Jurgen Klopp’s men looked the superior side from the off. The front four of Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho, Mohamed Salah and Danny Sturridge looked typically dangerous.

And it was unsurprisingly one of the aforementioned stars who opened the scoring. Coutinho cut in from the left to bend the most magnificent of efforts past the helpless Rob Elliot in the home side’s goal.

But then a familiar story played out for Liverpool as they conceded a soft goal.

Following a Liverpool attack breaking down on the edge of Newcastle’s box, one slide-rule pass from Jonjo Shelvey set Magpies striker Joselu clean through on the edge of the centre-circle. The central defensive partnership of Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren were left in no man’s land.

The former did catch up with the breaking Joselu as he entered their box. But Matip could only kick the ball off of the shin of the Spanish striker before watching it roll agonisingly past the faultless Simon Mignolet.

Newcastle trolled by the Match of the Day

Was a Sunderland fan in charge of the Match of the Day subtitles during the Newcastle v Liverpool game?

A screengrab went viral on Saturday night during the MOTD broadcast.

The commentator made the following comments about Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge:

Sturridge has scored in all four of his previous Premier League starts at Newcastle. For the Reds against the team in black and white, he boasts five goals in five appearances.

But the subtitles told viewers something vastly different. Newcastle were called “the black and white scum”.

Could this have been an honest error? That seems hard to believe.
