As per a report from journalist Dominic King, Newcastle United have made contact with the representatives of Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri, over a potential summer transfer.
Hit-and-miss debut Liverpool campaign
28-year-old Swiss international Shaqiri made the move to Anfield in the summer of 2018 from Stoke City, for a fee of £13.5 million.
The former Bayern Munich man was brought in to add depth to Liverpool’s front-line, with his performances over the first-half of the season having suggested another inspired piece of business on the part of the Reds’ board.
By the turn of the year, Shaqiri had already racked up 6 goals and 3 assists across all competitions, including a match-winning brace after being introduced off the bench versus Manchester United in December.
The second-half of the campaign, though, proved a different story.
Amid a dip in form, the gifted left-footer struggled for game-time, with Shaqiri having failed to find the net once in 2018/19 following the turn of the year.
And the current season has not proven much kinder to the Swiss star.
To this point, Shaqiri has managed just 3 starts across all competitions, the latest of which came back in December.
This is partly down to a persistent calf problem, but Shaqiri, overall, has yet to truly establish himself as the kind of option whom Jurgen Klopp can depend on week-in, week-out.
As such, speculation has inevitably begun to mount of late that the attacker could be on the move this summer.
And, as outlined above, one of Liverpool’s Premier League rivals could well prove to be Shaqiri’s next destination.
As per a report from Dominic King of the Daily Mail, Newcastle United have made initial contact with the 82-time capped international’s entourage, to sound out the possibility of a summer move to St. James’ Park.
Liverpool, for their part, are thought to be willing to negotiate their out-of-favour wide-man’s departure, in the case that ‘talks firm up’.
Shaqiri himself, meanwhile, would reportedly be interested in a Newcastle switch.
Significantly, though, it is added that this would only prove the case if the proposed big-money Saudi takeover of the Magpies goes through over the coming months.
Newcastle have sounded out Xherdhan Shaqiri’s representatives about a move this summer. Liverpool will not stand in his way if the initial talks firm up. Shaqiri would be interested, providing takeover goes through 🔴
