Newcastle fans plan Sunderland relegation party at the Stadium of Light

Newcastle vs Sunderland

Newcastle United fans have been planning to stage a ‘relegation party’ at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light.

Newcastle fans have been taking to social media in recent days to discuss how to celebrate Sunderland’s relegation to League One.

Of course, Newcastle looked well placed to stay in the Premier League for next season.

However the Black Cats have cottoned onto the Magpies supporters’ plans, and Sunderland have reacted. As reported in the Daily Mail:

The Wearsiders decided to remove all cash turnstiles for Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Norwich and they are almost certain to do the same for the games against Burton a week on Saturday and the season-finale versus champions-elect Wolves on May 6.

Anyone wishing to buy tickets must do so from the box office and must also have a purchase history, keeping out those who have turned up for the first time.

Sunderland are second bottom of the Championship, with 33 points from 42 games.

Chris Coleman’s men are six points from safety with four matches remaining this season. After Reading, Sunderland face Burton Albion, Fulham and Wolves.

Reading, meanwhile, are 19th in the division. The Royals have 42 points from 42 games.

Championship relegation odds

Burton Albion, bottom of the league, are 1/200 to go down to League One.

The bookies also have little confidence that Sunderland will beat the drop, pricing the Black Cats at 1/40 to go down.

Barnsley are the third favourites for the drop at 6/5.

As for Bolton, they are 6/4 for relegation, while Birmingham are 2/1 and Reading are 25/1.
