Newcastle’s Mitrovic questions the loyalty of Liverpool target Xherdan Shaqiri

World Cup Group E

World Cup Group E brings together Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia.

These four teams will all be in action on Sunday in Russia. Costa Rica will take on Serbia, while Brazil will face the Swiss.

In the second round of matches, Serbia will take on Switzerland.

Xherdan Shaqiri’s controversial boots

In the build up to Switzerland’s opener against Brazil, Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri has stirred up controversy on social media.

Shaqiri has uploaded a photo of his new boots on Instagram.

Wearing a pair of Nike Mercurial boots, Shaqiri will have an eye-catching design on the backs of the footwear.

One boot will sport the Swiss national flag, while the other will show off the Kosovo flag.

Shaqiri was born in Kosovo before he family moved to Switzerland.

Newcastle’s Mitrovic takes aim

It’s been left to Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic to take aim at Shaqiri for his boots.

Mitrovic, who spent last season on loan at Fulham from Newcastle, is quoted in the Times making the following statement about Shaqiri’s shoes:

I will not take it as a provocation, I am not interested in what he decides to do.

But I find one thing weird: if he loves Kosovo that much and never misses a chance to flaunt the flag, why did he refuse a chance to play for their team?

Shaqiri to Liverpool?

It’s common knowledge that Xherdan Shaqiri will not be at Stoke City at the start of 2018-19.

Shaqiri, arguably Stoke’s best player, has since made it clear that he has no intention of staying with the Potters.

Liverpool have been linked with a possible move for Shaqiri. Of course Liverpool appear to have missed out on signing Lyon’s Nabil Fekir.

Since being at Stoke Shaqiri has scored 15 and assisted 15 in 92 appearances.

Liverpool could sign Shaqiri for as little as 12 million pounds, according to the player’s release clause.
