Newcastle start transfer talks with Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho

France Football are reporting that Newcastle United have started talks with Philippe Coutinho ahead of a possible move from Barcelona to St James’ Park.

Coutinho is currently in limbo. He’s still on loan at Bayern Munich, however his season is over due to injury.

At the same time, it’s been widely reported that Barcelona have no interest in absorbing Coutinho back into their first team.

With Coutinho available for sale, Newcastle are looking to move in. France Football say:

Negotiations have already started and Coutinho’s entourage seem to believe strongly in the project (at Newcastle should the Saudi takeover complete) and in the possibility for the player to be part of it.

What France Football don’t talk about

There’s no mention of how much Newcastle would have to pay Barcelona to sign Coutinho.

Also, there are no details on Coutinho’s possible wages at St James’ Park, or the length of any contract he’s willing to sign.

Andy Carroll, Matty Longstaff and Javier Manquillo offer deals

The Athletic have confirmed that Andy Carroll, Matty Longstaff and Javier Manquillo have all been offered new deals to remain at Newcastle for the time-being.

All three players are set to become free agents on June 30. Readers are told:

The Athletic understands that Lee Charnley, Newcastle’s managing director, last week made contact with representatives of Carroll, Matty Longstaff and Javier Manquillo, all of whom are out of contract at the end of the month, floating the prospect of extended deals, as well as asking them to sign short-term extensions that would allow them to figure in Newcastle’s final nine league matches.

All three players’ futures must be resolved by June 23.
