Newcastle eyeing move for Monaco’s Antonio Barreca

Newcastle eyeing Barreca

Newcastle are said to be interested in Monaco full-back Antonio Barreca, according to the Mail.

The Magpies were close to signing Lazio defender Jordan Lukaku earlier this week.

However, after the full-back arrived in the North East, the deal would collapse.

As a result, Newcastle have seemingly turned their attention to Barreca as a Lukaku replacement.

Barreca joined Monaco in July of 2018 from Torino for a fee of around £8m.

Since moving to France though, Barreca has found his first-team chances very limited.

Rafa Benitez wants Newcastle to strengthen in January

Newcastle’s interest in Barreca comes on the back of a report by the Telegraph suggesting Rafa Benitez will leave Newcastle in the summer if new signings are not made.

Benitez’s side have had a poor 2018/19 season so far and sit just two points above the relegation zone.

Newcastle did pick up a 3-0 win over Cardiff in their last game but it is still quite clear they need to invest.

Newcastle have also been linked with a move for Man United’s Antonio Valencia.

United’s next league game sees them play host to Manchester City.
