Nasser Al-Khelaifi talks to RMC Sport
PSG CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi has spoken exclusively to RMC Sport on Tuesday.
In a stark warning about the possible financial implications set to hit football from the Covid-19 crisis, Al-Khelaifi has revealed that PSG may suffer “colossal” financial losses due to the pandemic.
Al-Khelaifi also discussed the framework needed to restart football in France.
PSG risk ‘colossal financial losses’ due to Covid-19
During the interview, RMC Sport rolled out the narrative that of all professional football clubs in France, PSG were obviously the “ones with the least financial difficulties” in these times.
That prompted Al-Khelaifi to outline the financial risks facing the Parisians:
I know perfectly well that (PSG) are not in the most difficult circumstances (when compared to others). But believe me, if you look at it from a strict financial point of view, the impact of current events – and all the uncertainties that ensue – will be considerable for a club like ours.
I’m not going to reveal a secret to you by telling you that our payroll is substantial. At the end of the season, we risk suffering colossal losses.
We will handle it, but nothing will be simple and it will take time to find a balance.

How will Neymar react to this?
When the topic of player wage cuts was raised by RMC Sport, Al-Khelaifi offered the following curt answer:
I expect them to make an effort for their club. They know their responsibilities.
Monaco – with the second largest wage bill after PSG – are said to be particularly worried about their financial situation – a stunning state of affairs considering the profits that they have made on players in recent years.

Discussion on when Ligue 1 can restart
On Monday, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) revealed their plans to restart the 2019-20 season in France.
In a statement, the LFP earmarked June 17 as the return date for Ligue 1 football:
The bureau of the board of directors unanimously voted on April 10 for the resumption of the Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 championships to finish by July 25, and a commencement on August 22 and 23, 2020 of the 2020/2021 season.
This provides for a restart of the 2019/2020 season on June 17, 2020.
RMC Sport naturally asked Al-Khelaifi for his thoughts on when football should return.
The PSG CEO dodged giving any specific timeframe. Instead, he replied with the following words of caution:
These discussions must be kept confidential if there is to be a chance of success. In general, we talk too much.
Everyone has an opinion, and it is normal, but in the end it is as if we scored an own-goal. For example, on the schedule, everything comes out in the press even before the League has officially communicated.
I even read that some wanted Ligue 1 to be 22 clubs (in 2020-21). This is not an option or even a subject of discussion.
For me, I always said that we had to stick to a principle: finishing the competitions and setting the schedules depends on the health situation, the decisions of the government and UEFA.
We must learn from this crisis together to come out stronger for the future of football in France.
We must all be united and stop with any selfish behaviour.
Right now there are no big, medium or small clubs… Only together can we win.
Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who as president of PSG will be leading Ligue 1 clubs' negotiations with BeIN Sports, whose boss is Nasser Al-Khelaifi, has announced that in these times "we need to stop acting egotistically"…
