Napoli chief suggests clubs will have to pay €90m to land Man City-linked Koulibaly

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis appears to have confirmed what fee it would take for the Serie A outfit to part ways with Kalidou Koulibaly.

Napoli standout

Koulibaly has been plying his trade at the Stadio San Paolo for just over six years now.

Napoli signed the powerful stopper from Belgian outfit Genk for a fee just shy of £7m.

Koulibaly has since gone on to cement himself as an absolutely integral member of the Naples-based outfit’s backline, whilst also earning a name as one of the best centre-halves in Europe.

All told, Koulibaly has notched 244 appearances across all competitions for the Azzurri, helping guide the club to a Supercoppa Italiana and, more recently, the Coppa Italia.

Koulibaly price-tag set?

Now, though, altogether unsurprisingly, the commanding centre-back appears to be attracting interest from one of Europe’s heavyweights.

The outfit in question are Manchester City, whose backline is in clear need of reinforcements.

The Sky Blues are thought to have wrapped up a deal for Nathan Ake in recent days. But it’s believed that City are still in the market for a 2nd centre-back addition, with Koulibaly high on their list of targets.

Now, as mentioned above, Napoli’s president has essentially informed Man City of the the sum that they will need to cough up to land the African stopper. According to Aurelio De Laurentiis, the Citizens will need to pay €90m for Koulibaly:

“Kalidou is a great person, I would be terribly sad to lose him. But there is a time for everything, even to move apart.

“But the €90m is not on the table and so it takes two to make a deal.”

Given the fact that Koulibaly is one of the top centre-backs in Europe, €90m may seem like a decent asking price.

But with the defender already 29 years of age, perhaps City may be better served spending such a sum on a centre-half with more of his career still ahead of him?
