According to a report from the Independent this afternoon, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele is inching closer to an exit from the club at the end of the season.
Dembele, now 30, has established himself as one of the Premier League’s finest midfielders over the last couple of seasons, with his performances in the Champions League versus the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus this season having only served to back the opinions of Spurs fans the world over, in that the Belgian international is a genuine world-class performer.
In fact, so impressive was Dembele during his side’s European ventures before their eventual elimination at the hands of Juventus in the Champions League’s round of 16 last month, that a number of the continent’s giants are said to have since added the Tottenham man to their summer transfer wish-lists.
Both Real Madrid and, in particular, Juventus, have been named as the clubs most interested in a swoop for Dembele at the end of the season, with the Italian champions known to be on the lookout for reinforcements in the middle of the park.
After being questioned on his club future by reporters at the end of March, Dembele, who’s contract is set to expire next summer, first moved to reassure Tottenham’s fans by expressing his happiness in the English capital, before surprisingly casting doubt on his situation by revealing that the current campaign could be his last with Spurs:
‘At this moment, I am very happy at Tottenham. I do not lie when I say that I do not think about a big transfer. I want to play a World Cup and afterwards we will see.’
‘Really, I’m not aware of the interest of other clubs. And, besides, I told my agent to wait for the summer to tell me about any offers. For now, I’m only focussing on Tottenham. Maybe this is my last season or maybe I’ll sign a new deal. We’ll see.’
On the move?
Inevitably, Dembele’s comments have since led to increasing speculation that he will in fact be on the move this summer, with the aforementioned report from the Independent today claiming that the Belgian international is leaning very much towards trying his luck in a new league.
The report cites the player’s worries that the physical demands of lining out in Mauricio Pochettino’s system for another year could prove too demanding at the age of 31, with the riches of the Chinese Super League a tempting option for Dembele.
However, if he decides to try his luck in another European league, Serie A looks the most likely option, with Juventus, as mentioned above, topping the list of the Spurs’ man’s suitors.
