Man United 2 – Benfica 0
Manchester United are within touching distance of the last-16 of the Champions League.
That’s after a 2-0 home win over Benfica on Tuesday night.
For the second match running against the Red Devils, Benfica’s teenage goalie Mile Svilar conceded a memorable goal.
A fortnight ago in Portugal, Svilar caught a Marcus Rashford free-kick behind his goalline.
On Tuesday, the 18-year-old was unfortunate to see Nemanja Matic’s shot cannon off the post and off his arm into the net.
United wrapped up the win with a second half Delay Blind penalty.
Jose Mourinho on Romelu Lukaku
After the game, Jose Mourinho was grilled on why Romelu Lukaku didn’t take the Man United penalty against Benfica.
Lukaku went throughout October without scoring a goal.
Indeed, it’s now six games with a goal for the 75 million pound striker.
Moreover, Lukaku has driven a wedge between Mourinho and the Man United fans, as the Special One has slammed the club’s supporters for getting on the Belgian’s back.
So why didn’t Lukaku take the spot-kick?
Mourinho claimed he did his attacker a favour by “protecting” him against Benfica.
The Special One was obviously fearful of the backlash had Lukaku missed the penalty.
But does that reveal just how low Lukaku’s confidence is right now? Shouldn’t Mourinho be trying to be more positive?
MOURINHO: – Sometimes it’s my job to protect the players.
