Moise Kean enjoying renaissance in France / Was the Italian underused on Merseyside?

Frustration

Moise Kean’s time at Everton was less than enjoyable. The 20-year-old failed to nail down a regular starting position at the club.

Brought in during Marco Silva’s reign, the Italian was brought on from the bench 23 times during a season which culminated in compatriot Carlo Ancelotti taking over.

Kean again featured as a substitute at the start of the 2020/21 campaign.

The former Juventus youth product, though, soon realised that he would need to move on from the Toffees to continue his development. At 20, failing to secure regular first-team football can prove detrimental to long-term potential being achieved.

Speaking to the official PSG website following his recent loan arrival, Kean explained: “I chose Paris Saint-Germain because it’s a huge club that has won lots of trophies. I feel really important because lots of great players have worn this shirt. I hope I will be worthy of it.”

“I am still young and continue to learn. There are some great players at Paris Saint-Germain, who are more experienced than me.”

“When I will get my chance to play, I will give my all on the pitch. My ambition is to reach the highest level possible and to give everything for the team.”

Leaving the bench behind

Since his arrival in Paris, Thomas Tuchel has shown immediate trust in Moise Kean. The Italian started both games for which he was available.

A 4-0 win against Dijon saw Kean score twice. Mauro Icardi is sidelined with a minor knee injury at present, however Kean has already matched the Argentine’s goal tally for the season.

In the Champions League, Kean did not start against Manchester United in a 2-1 loss, but was utilised from the off against Istanbul Basaksehir, and scored twice. A fine header from a corner was followed by an impressive spin and finish to secure all 3 points for the Parisians.

The strong form of the former Juventus man suggests that he made the right decision in departing Everton. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s stellar exploits have seen the England international nail down his place as the Toffees’ undisputed starting striker.

Without European football at Goodison Park, squad depth and rotation are not currently as vital as at PSG. Should Everton qualify for Europe next season, though, Kean may be handed a further opportunity.

Should the Italian continue his fine form in Paris, however, the capital club may want to make his arrival permanent.
