Danish sensation Mikkel Damsgaard added his name to an exclusive club after finding the net in his country’s eventual defeat at the hands of England on Wednesday.

Kane makes the difference

The 2nd of two Euro 2020 semi-final clashes played out a little less than 24 hours ago.

Gareth Southgate’s England welcomed tournament darlings Denmark to Wembley, for the right to take on Italy in Sunday’s highly anticipated showpiece occasion.

And, when all was said and done in London, it was the former, albeit just, who got the job done.

Visitors Denmark actually opened the scoring on the night, when Mikkel Damsgaard, one of the revelations of the summer thus far, directed a stunning long-range free-kick beyond the flailing Jordan Pickford:

England’s quality, though, soon shone through.

After a sustained spell of pressure forced Simon Kjaer into an own goal shortly before the interval, the game’s telling moment was eventually forthcoming deep into extra-time.

After Raheem Sterling went to ground in the Denmark box, referee Danny Makkelie showed little hesitation in pointing to the spot, allowing Harry Kane to slot home on the rebound, after seeing his initial effort kept out by Kasper Schmeichel:

England, in turn, held on, to secure a 2-1 win, and a spot in Sunday’s Wembley finale.

Company for Messi

Whilst his latest impressive efforts ultimately proved to be in vain, though, one Danish star who can certainly hold his head high on the back of the country’s elimination from Euro 2020 is Mikkel Damsgaard.

After being afforded the chance to impress on the back of Christian Eriksen’s frightening opening day cardiac arrest, Sampdoria talent Damsgaard grasped his opportunity with both hands, lighting up the tournament courtesy of a stellar blend of pace, touch, vision and eye for the spectacular.

And it was the latter of these traits which saw the 21-year-old join an exclusive international club on Wednesday night.

Remarkably, Damsgaard followed Lionel Messi as one of only two players to have found the net from a direct free-kick at either the European Championships or Copa America this summer.
