Arsenal’s U21 outfit were back in action this evening, with their eventual victory having given rise to a number of noteworthy talking points.
The Gunners’ up-and-coming crop of young talent kicked their campaign into gear a short time ago.
24 hours on from the club’s senior stars making short work of Crystal Palace, Mehmet Ali’s U21s welcomed Manchester United to north London, for a Premier League 2 clash.
And, when all was said and done at Meadow Park, Arsenal’s youngsters secured a similarly positive result.
Goals on the part of Khayon Edwards, Marquinhos, and Miguel Azeez gave rise to a 3-1 triumph, ensuring that Charlie Wellens’ opener on the day ultimately proved little more than a consolation.
Brazilian starlet Marquinhos, a cut-price summer arrival from Sao Paulo, looked particularly impressive, not only finding the net, but also playing a hand in both of the hosts’ two other goals, laying on Azeez’s result-clincher courtesy of a sumptuous assist.
Elsewhere, there was also positive news when it comes to Mikel Arteta’s senior ranks, as a key member of the club’s backline - Takehiro Tomiyasu - saw out the opening 45 minutes with little fuss, amid ongoing efforts to recover full fitness.
Not only that, but Arteta himself was in attendance at Meadow Park, looking impressed by what he witnessed.
