Mikel Arteta provides injury update on Emile Smith Rowe & discusses how he will use Saka

Arsenal down Southampton

Arsenal were in Premier League action on Wednesday evening.

The Gunners faced off with Southampton for a second time in the space of a week, after being knocked out of the FA Cup by the Saints over the weekend.

However, despite their loss in the cup, Arsenal actually headed into the tie in solid form – having notched four wins and a draw from their previous five Premier League outings.

And, at St. Mary’s, that solid run continued.

Arsenal were without the services of key stopper Kieran Tierney for the clash, but Cedric did a superb job filling in at left-back, playing a key role in the club’s eventual 3-1 win.

Nicolas Pepe cancelled out Stuart Armstrong’s opener eight minutes in. This was followed by Bukayo Saka firing the Gunners into the lead just before the break.

And Saka then turned provider in the second-half, teeing up Alexandre Lacazette to round out an impressive win:

Mikel Arteta on Smith Rowe

On an otherwise positive evening, though, the north Londoners were also dealt a blow on the personnel front.

Emile Smith Rowe has been crucial to Arsenal’s aforementioned recent success, but looked in considerable discomfort when forced off 72 minutes in on Tuesday:

In turn, Mikel Arteta has since provided an update on the Arsenal youngster, confirming that Smith Rowe was suffering with ‘muscular discomfort’:

“He was injured for the cup game, we knew he could probably not play the whole game today. He had some muscular discomfort and had to come off.”

There has, as of yet, been no update regarding Smith Rowe’s potential involvement for Arsenal vs Manchester United on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Arteta has also opened up on where he believes Saka is best utilised. And though the Spaniard admitted that he feels an attacking berth best suits the youngster, Arteta also conceded that he may be forced to provide cover at left-back, too:

“I think he’s much better when he plays in the last line of our attack. The truth is that we have only one left-footed full back and sometimes we’ll have to use him there. It’s good for his development as well to play there.”
