Mikel Arteta hints that Matteo Guendouzi’s Arsenal career may not be over just yet

Arsenal and Matteo Guendouzi temporarily part ways

Arsenal signed Matteo Guendouzi in 2018 from Ligue 2 side Lorient and, in his opening campaign with the club, were certain that they had uncovered another gem. The Frenchman featured a whopping 48 times as he took to Premier League football under Unai Emery like a duck to water, but struggled when Mikel Arteta took over.

Left out as a result of various disciplinary and injury issues, the then-20-year-old midfielder spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Hertha Berlin, before departing this past summer for Marseille on an initial loan deal.

However, while the deal was originally reported as featuring an obligation to buy, it was later announced as an option to buy by the Ligue 1 side, leaving the reality of the situation unknown.

Does Guendouzi have an Arsenal future?

And, judging by Mikel Arteta’s recent comments about the French midfielder, his Arsenal career may not be over just yet. Speaking to the media ahead of the Gunners welcoming Crystal Palace to The Emirates next Monday, the Spaniard was asked about the possibility of recalling Guendouzi in January, and said:

For right now, he is gone for the season, and I think he is having a really good spell in Marseilles, and it is part of the plan that we made with him, and he has continued with his development, and we will make a decision at the end of the year.

When further pressed by the reporter about whether Guendouzi has a chance of playing for Arsenal again, Arteta refused to rule the possibility out, explaining:

“I do not think you can say that [he has played his last game for Arsenal] about a player that was owned by the club”

Could Arsenal’s fans yet see Matteo Guendouzi step onto the Emirates turf in Red and White once more?
