Mikel Arteta expecting ‘big boost’ when Martinelli returns for Arsenal’s senior side

Mikel Arteta expecting ‘big boost’ when Martinelli returns for Arsenal’s senior side

A big miss

The start of Arsenal’s season can be described by it’s lacking of three main attributes: energy, desire and goals. The Gunners have begun the season in horrific form which has left them solidly in the bottom half of the Premier League.

The aforementioned characteristics have been completely absent, and the side are in desperate need of an injection of something different to provide them the kick they need to push on and turn their season around.

Fortunately for Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta, the return of Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli could provide just that. The 19-year-old joined Arsenal in the summer of 2019, it was expected that he would join the development squad and play with the under 23s however his outstanding performances for the Europa League side were an instant hit and convinced then coach Unai Emery he should be with the first team.

He went on to play in the Premier League and would convince many Arsenal fans that he had a long-term future in there. However, an injury during training meant that Martinelli was unavailable for Arteta during Project Restart, and the affliction was so serious that Martinelli missed the entirety of the season and the start of this.

However that could soon change. Martinelli returned to the Arsenal youth side for their match against AFC Wimbledon. Martinelli played several minutes in the match and was impressive providing dynamism and determination to show he is ready for a return to the senior pitch.

A subtle Martinelli hit

Typically, Arsenal like to have their players which return from injury play several games for the under-23 squad in order to get them up to full fitness. As mentioned, Martinelli has played for the youth side and and players such as Calum Chambers and Pablo Mari have played several games also and have made the step up to the Europa League squad.

Chambers and Mari were both involved in yesterday’s under-23 match against Leicester City, however, there was no sign of Martinelli in the entire squad.

There has been no news of a setback for the young Brazilian forward, and that leaves many believing that Martinelli could be included in the senior squad who travel to Everton for the Saturday afternoon kick-off.

Arteta spoke about Martinelli ahead of the match with the Toffees and the article on the Arsenal website described him as ‘very close’ to full fitness.

“Gabi is pure enthusiasm, energy, belief, charisma and goals,” Arteta said. “This is him. He’s around the training ground and he’s around our training sessions and the energy is different because he goes 100 miles per hour.”

“He’s got this passion and his way of playing and he is a threat. He’s a player that we’ve been missing because he brings something special to the team. He’s contagious with his attitude and I think it’s going to be a big boost when we have him.”

Note Arteta’s inclusion of the word ‘goals’ in his description of the Brazilian. Arsenal have been seriously lacking in clinical firepower for most of the season which has been a big factor in in their current poor league position. The Spaniard’s words in combination with his absence in the youth side all points towards Martinelli returning to the senior side very soon.
