Newcastle break transfer record

After a 14 year wait, Newcastle United finally broke their previous transfer record in January of 2019.

Newcastle’s most expensive player was Michael Owen who joined the Magpies in 2005.

But after signing Miguel Almiron from Atlanta for a fee of around £20m, the former MLS star is now their most expensive player.

Miguel Almiron is an attacking midfielder who scored 22 and assisted 21 for his previous club, Atalanta.

Newcastle would also complete the loan signing of AS Monaco defender Antonio Barreca in January.

In previous weeks the Telegraph was reporting that Rafa Benitez would leave Newcastle in the summer if he did not get any January signings.

Now though, after Newcastle broke their transfer record on Miguel, Magpies chairman Mike Ashley is expecting Benitez to sign a new contract with Newcastle, according to the Mirror.

Benitez’s current Newcastle deal runs till the end of the 2018/19 season.

Wolves vs Newcastle

Newcastle’s last game saw them lose 1-0 away to Tottenham, Almiron did not feature in any capacity.

However, the midfielder could be set to feature in Newcastle’s next game vs Wolves.

Newcastle head into the game 15th in the league having won two and lost three of their last five league outings.

Benitez’s side are also just two points above the relegation zone.

Wolves, on the other hand, are on a three-game win streak and sit 7th in the table.
