Former English international Michael Owen has today responded to the numerous jibes aimed in his direction from fans of Liverpool over the last few days.
Owen’s social media reply comes after a story involving he and Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema went viral over the weekend.
Speaking in an interview with Canal+, Owen revealed that Manchester United opted to sign him due to the fact that they missed out on the signature of Benzema to Real Madrid in 2009.
Owen openly thanked French hitman Benzema for opting for a move to the Bernabeu over Old Trafford, as his own switch to Manchester would likely not have come to fruition had the then-Lyon star chosen to take his talents to the Premier League.
While Owen may have seen his explanation of the situation as little more than an amusing insight into the inner-workings of transfers, supporters of Liverpool saw it as yet another instance of the former Ballon D’Or winner’s betrayal against their club.
Owen currently acts as an international ambassador for the Anfield outfit, with many of Liverpool’s fans of the opinion that the 37-year-old should keep stories of his connection to Manchester United at an absolute minimum due to this position.
As a result, large sections of the Reds’ fanbase took to social media to tear into their one-time club legend as ‘Judas’ and a ‘traitor’, insults which Owen himself has today responded to.
