How Michael Carrick helped Man United beat City

Manchester City 2 – Man United 3

Man City will no doubt still win the 2017-18 Premier League title. But Man United gave their fans something to cheer on Saturday in an epic 3-2 win at their noisy neighbours.

For the second match running, Pep Guardiola’s men conceded three goals in game.

But unlike at Liverpool, Man City were 2-up against United at the break.

Vincent Kompany set the early tone as the City legend headed home a 25th minute corner. Five minutes later City were in dreamland as Ilkay Gundogan doubled City’s advantage.

But everything changed in the second half as United hit back. Man United scored three times in 16 second half minutes to turn the match on it’s head.

Paul Pogba scored twice, and Chris Smalling volleyed home the third as United made sure City aren’t Premier League champions this weekend.

Michael Carrick helping Paul Pogba

After the match, Pogba spoke to Thierry Henry about the win and his performance.

During the chat, Pogba told Henry how Michael Carrick has been helping him in training.

Carrick is now part of Jose Mourinho’s backroom staff, having announced he’ll officially retire at the end of the season.

But, as revealed by Pogba, Carrick is already having an influence behind the scenes. Pogba told Thierry Henry:

I give the credit to Michael (Carrick) because every time after the game he shows me the video, make those runs. He has helped me a lot with this, every time after training or every time after a game he will say, “It’s very important, nobody can stop you”. It’s hard to make this run, because you have to stay, you have to control.

You score one goal and your confidence goes up. He (Alexis Sanchez) always tells me when you pass me the ball, ‘Just make the run, I see you’.

‘Numero uno!’ – High praise from one Manchester derby hero to another.
