Mesut Ozil broke an Eric Cantona PL record during Arsenal 3-0 Watford

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil this afternoon broke a Premier League record long held by Manchester United legend Eric Cantona, as the Gunners put Watford to the sword by 3 goals to nil.

The two sides went head to head at the Emirates in today’s early kick-off, with Arsenal desperate to build on their morale-boosting 2-0 victory over AC Milan on Thursday night.

Watford, meanwhile, had picked up 2 wins on the bounce in their last 2 league outings, lifting Javi Gracia’s side back into the top half of the Premier League table.

Arsenal rested both Aaron Ramsey and Laurent Koscielny for their Europa League return clash with AC Milan in London next week, meaning there were rare starts for both Mohamed Elneny and Rob Holding:

Watford, meanwhile, lined up as follows:

A relatively comfortable afternoon’s work for hosts Arsenal saw the North Londoners emerge with a 3-0 victory, courtesy of goals from Shkodran Mustafi, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The task of the Gunners could have been made markedly more difficult in the 62nd minute, though, when Watford were awarded a penalty, just 3 minutes after Aubameyang had doubled the home side’s lead.

However, the subsequent spot-kick was missed by Troy Deeney, who’s disappointing effort down the middle was parried by Petr Cech.

While it was a momentous day for Petr Cech as the legendary shot-stopper became the first goalkeeper ever to keep 200 clean sheets in the Premier League, Arsenal’s victory also featured a landmark for Mesut Ozil.

The gifted German midfielder, long known for his creative abilities, set up Shkodran Mustafi for the game’s opener this afternoon with a pinpoint free-kick.

And Ozil’s assist was his 50th in the Premier League, breaking a record long held by Manchester United legend Eric Cantona:
