Why Memphis Depay will wear only his first name at Lyon after Man United move

Memphis set for Lyon debut

After arriving from Manchester United on Friday, Memphis Depay looks set to make his Lyon debut this evening.

Lyon host Marseille and they will be looking for a win to cement fourth spot in Ligue 1, with an eye on the three-team title race unfolding ahead of them.

For Memphis it is a new start after a struggle at Manchester United, under both Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.

All signs point to the Dutch winger having the opportunity to return to Manchester United, should he impress in Ligue 1.

Memphis, number 9

As the French press get to know Memphis Depay, they have confirmed that the former PSV star will continue to only wear his first name on his new Lyon number 9 shirt.

He prefers to just be called Memphis, and that will continue to be the only name on his shirt.

Depay is the surname of his father Dennis, who left the family when he was only four years old and only reappeared when Memphis emerged as a young star in Dutch football.

Dennis Depay denies that he abandoned Memphis and his family but one thing is for certain: The pair have not talked since the former Manchester United winger was 17.

Meanwhile, the French media are just getting familiar with the story of Memphis, his love of hats and the fact that he has a full size boxing ring in his home in Holland.
