Maurizio Sarri: ‘Disaster’ settled Tottenham 1 – Chelsea 0

Tottenham 1 – Chelsea 0

On Tuesday night at Wembley, Tottenham beat Chelsea 1-0 in the Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg.

Chelsea will host Spurs at Stamford Bridge in the return tie on January 22.

Spurs have now won their last three matches in a row against the Pensioners.

In the cup, a first half penalty from Harry Kane was enough to earn Tottenham the win.

However the way in which the penalty was awarded in the match provoked plenty of backlash.

Kane was taken out in the Chelsea box by goalie Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The foul was never in doubt, however there was a big question as to whether Kane had been in an offside position beforehand.

VAR is in operation for the Carabao Cup.

On Tuesday night, it took a little longer than 90 seconds before a decision on the Kane offside call was made.

In the end the decision was made that Kane was onside.

Maurizio Sarri: VAR is a disaster

In his post match presser, Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri slammed the use of VAR in the Spurs game.

The Chelsea boss called the new system a “disaster”.

Moreover, Sarri questioned whether VAR’s Kane decision was actually the right one:

Maybe the VAR camera was in a different position. From our position he was clearly offside. It depends where the camera is.

If the camera is not in line it is difficult to judge whether he is offside or not.

Mauricio Pochettino on VAR

Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino also had criticisms of VAR after the game.

The Spurs boss complained that it took over five minutes for VAR to reach it’s decision on whether Kane was offside:

We have six months to improve the system. There is a lot of work to do.
