Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham need to spend more to compete at top level

Pochettino on Tottenham’s lack of spending

In 2018 Tottenham became the first Premier League side not to sign a single player in a summer transfer window since 2003.

Despite not adding to their squad over the summer, Spurs are still enjoying a solid start to the season.

After 21 league games, Spurs are 3rd in the Premier League and just six points off 1st place Liverpool.

Their most recent game also saw them progress to the 4th round of the FA Cup after beating Tranmere Rovers.

Despite having their best ever start to a Premier League season, Maurice Pochettino believes Spurs need to start spending more to compete with the worlds elite clubs:

“The other day I saw a stat that in the last 10 years in England & Europe how the teams were spending money.

“I think we were on the bottom. Of course we’re doing a fantastic job. But if we want to be real contenders we need to operate in a different way in the future.”

One player Tottenham have reportedly been linked with recently is Sampdoria defender, Joachim Andersen.

To get to the semi-final Spurs beat Watford via penalties in the 3rd round, West Ham 3-1 in the round of 16 and Arsenal 2-0 in the quarter-final.

Chelsea, on the other hand, beat Liverpool 2-1 in the 3rd round, Derby 3-2 in the round of 16 and Bournemouth 1-0 in the quarter-final.

Pochettino has also confirmed that Spurs will be without Mousa Dembele and Jan Vertonghen for Tuesday’s game.
