Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that central-defender Toby Alderweireld is “fully committed” to Tottenham Hotspur following speculation that he is unhappy about his current contract situation at the club.
Tottenham’s wage structure has become quite a hot topic for debate.
It is incredibly low for a club who are consistently challenging for the top four.
Players like Kane, Dele and Rose could all go elsewhere and nearly double or even triple the wages they earn at Tottenham.
Toby Alderweireld, arguably the best centre-back in the league, gets paid £50k-a-week, compare that to Dejan Lovren who earns double that at Liverpool.
The father and agent of Toby Alderweireld believes that his client/son either deserves a better contract or given a transfer away.
“Toby is always good. Even after his injury he recovered well – Tottenham’s statistics fell sharply during his absence.
Toby is impressive. And for his performances, he deserves either a correct contract from Tottenham or a transfer.”
The Belgian has been indispensable for Tottenham since arriving in 2015 from Southampton.
Tottenham were defensively frail prior to his arrival, they have now conceded the fewest goals in the two seasons he has been in North London.
Mauricio Pochettino admitted that he spoke with Alderweireld on Thursday morning.
Much to the relief of the fans, the player is “Fully committed”, according to the Argentine head coach.
“It is true, there is a lot of rumour in the last few days,”
He was talking with me in my office this morning. He is happy, he wants to make fully clear his position that he is fully committed to the club.
He is happy with his contract – two years plus one – but it is not easy.
I recognise that in the last few days there have been some rumours but he is so happy and so calm.
His idea is to try and play here and he has no reason to move.”
