Southampton v Man United: Premier League preview

Manchester United visit St Mary’s on Saturday looking to continue their fine start to the season.

The Red Devils head into the weekend second in the table, although their record is identical to leaders Manchester City.

Man United scored three late goals in their 4-0 win over Everton last weekend. Antonio Valencia, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Lukaku and substitute Anthony Martial were all on the scoresheet.

Southampton’s first real test

Southampton moved up to 9th after their 1-0 win at bottom side Crystal Palace. Steven Davis’ early goal separated the two sides, while summer signing Mario Lemina put in a brilliant performance in midfield.

Saturday’s game will be Southampton’s toughest of the campaign by quite some distance. Mauricio Pellegrino’s side are yet to face any of the sides that finished in the top half of the table last season.

The Saints may be slightly fresher than their opponents thanks to Man United’s midweek Carabao Cup tie against Burton Albion.

This fixture ended in a 0-0 draw at the back in of last season, although United were controversial 3-2 winners when two the sides faced each other in the EFL Cup final at Wembley in February.

Charlie Austin is a minor doubt after picking up a knock.

Midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is expected to return. The 22-year-old missed the win at Palace after being given time off due to the birth of his daughter.

Luke Shaw is unlikely to face his former side. The England international has returned from injury but remains a fitness doubt.

Marcos Rojo is a long-term absentee and is still months away from a comeback, as is Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
