Newcastle v Bournemouth: Premier League preview

Bournemouth travel to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday.

Both sides suffered 1-0 defeats last weekend, as Bournemouth continue to occupy a spot in the relegation zone, paying the price for losing all of their first four league games.

Eddie Howe’s side suffered a narrow home defeat at the hands of champions Chelsea, with Eden Hazard scoring the winner. The Cherries have only kept one clean sheet in the league this season.

Newcastle sit in 9th following last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Burnley. It’s at home where Rafa Benitez’s side have picked up most of their points.

The newly-promoted side can consider St James’ Park something of a fortress with three wins and a draw in their five home matches.

That said, Newcastle only have one win in their last five and will need to capitalise on the league’s second worst attacking side.

Bournemouth team news v Newcastle

Benik Afobe will be assessed after being forced off against Chelsea. The club will be hoping that it was just a case of cramp rather than a muscle strain.

Junior Stanislas was another casualty against the Blues. The winger has been hampered throughout the year by an ongoing hernia problem.

Jermain Defoe is available. The striker’s halftime withdrawal against Chelsea was purely tactical, Howe confirmed.

Josh King and Ryan Fraser will be monitored but are likely to shake off their respective injuries.

Brad Smith is a long-term absentee, while Tyrone Mings could make his comeback after the international break.

Dan Gosling could face his former employers.
