Valencia vs Barcelona Confirmed Line-ups

Valencia vs Barcelona match preview

There is an enormous game in Spain on Thursday evening: Valencia versus Barcelona in the semi-final second leg of the Copa del Rey.

Can Barcelona inch closer to the Spanish double by progressing at the Mestalla?

Or, will Valencia come up trumps and turn round their 1-0 deficit to Barcelona?

There is little doubt that this will be a fascinating encounter.

The first leg: Barcelona 1 – Valencia 0

Barcelona took on Valencia at the Camp Nou exactly a week ago.

A tight encounter in front of nearly 51,000 fans was settled with a Luis Suarez goal, from a Leo Messi assist, on 67 minutes.

This was the second match between Valencia and Barcelona this season. They drew 1-1 at the Mestalla in late November.

Rodrigo scored the opener for Valencia after Barcelona and Leo Messi had been denied what looked like a clear and legal goal which crossed the line, but was not spotted by the officials.

Barcelona equalised thanks to Jordi Alba, who was set up by Leo Messi with eight minutes remaining.

Can Valencia turn their horror form around?

Valencia started the season in some style, but their current form is not great at all.

Los Che have lost three La Liga games on the bounce, including a 4-1 shellacking at the hands of Real Madrid, followed by a 1-0 loss at Atletico Madrid last weekend.

Their only win in the last five games was in the last round of the Copa del Rey, a penalty shoot-out win over Deportivo Alaves in the second leg.

Are Barcelona starting to wobble?

Barcelona’s form has wobbled a little in recent weeks, by their own high standards. The Catalans remain unbeaten in La Liga in 2017/2018.

But, Barcelona did lose at Espanyol in the last round of the Copa del Rey and were also held to a draw by their local rivals in La Liga on this past weekend.

Any thoughts of a Barcelona wobble would likely be dispelled by reaching the Copa del Rey final. Sevilla await the winners after beating Leganes over two legs on Wednesday night.

Valencia vs Barcelona team news

The big question for Barcelona is who will play in central defence alongside Samuel Umtiti.

Gerard Pique injured his knee against Espanyol and was thought to be out of this match. Pique has travelled to Valencia but it seems likely he will be rested, with one eye on the clash with Chelsea in the Champions League.

Thomas Vermaelen is injured and definitely misses out. Yery Mina is available but is yet to play for Barcelona and this could be a high pressure, octane encounter to include the Colombian in for his first appearance.

So the most likely scenario is Sergio Busquets starts in the centre of defence. Not his natural position, but he has played there before.

Both Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba are playing on a tightrope, if they are booked in the semi-final second leg, they will miss the final.

Goncalo Guedes, arguably Valencia’s best player this season, is expected to start on the bench for the home side.
